Ways to help
Each of our collaborators has a unique story, and continues to use their experiences to reach and help others.
Below are some ways you can get involved and support members of the film team.
Producer Margie Ratliff is starting the DPEA, a non-profit organization that will focus on documentary film participants.
About the DPEA
Our mission is to bring vital resources to past, present, and future people who have been in documentary films. These include legal, mental health, counseling, advocacy, mediation, and mentorship resources.
A future goal will be to educate documentary and “based-on-true-life” filmmakers in how to ethically engage with their film participants and characters.
We have started this GoFundMe to help purchase camera gear for Ahmed Hassan, a filmmaker from Egypt who focuses on using his camera to fight for social justice.
Ahmed was part of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution and used his camera to capture the human stories behind the protests and his work was an integral part of the Oscar-nominated documentary “The Square.” Ahmed shared his journey with us during the filming of the new documentary “Subject.” The difficult political climate in Egypt led him to make the tough decision to leave his home country for Istanbul. Life in Istanbul presented its own challenges, and Ahmed was forced to sell his camera and gear just to survive.
After finishing filming for “Subject” Ahmed received an opportunity to start anew in New York City, where he currently resides. He maintains a passion for filmmaking and we are asking for support to help him buy a new camera and gear, which are vital to his livelihood as a filmmaker.
Co-producer Susanne Reisenbichler is in need of a new form of transportation so she can continue her advocacy work with survivors of domestic violence.
Susanne was a participant in “The Wolfpack,” a life-changing experience that helped her break free from a violent and abusive relationship. She is now a best-selling author, was ordained advocate for New York City by the Mayor’s office and has made it her mission to reach out to and support others who experienced similar atrocities that she faced.
Susanne explains on her GoFundMe page that her current car is older and dangerous to drive. She wants to reach rural communities and open a healing center for women and children “Where they have a chance to climb out of their dungeon.” A newer, safer car is an important factor to allow her to continue her advocacy work.
